Construction Industry Supporters Meet Trainees at Connect Over Coffee

In conjunction with Clark Construction’s annual Week of Service, Clark employees and other members of the construction industry joined Hope Builders for its quarterly Connect Over Coffee speed networking event.

Volunteers first heard from Anthony, a trainee currently enrolled in Hope Builders’ Construction Training Program. Anthony was referred to the program by a friend after he was laid off from his job and struggled to find new employment. He jumped at the opportunity to get his foot in the door of the construction industry.

Anthony shared with guests that his time at Hope Builders has been incredibly positive, offering hands-on training with tools and techniques for cement, steel framing, and more. He emphasized that his instructors have been very supportive, introducing opportunities he had not previously considered. Although his primary interest when starting the program was plumbing, he now feels prepared to work in other areas of construction as well. His long-term aspiration is to continue gaining experience and ultimately find a fulfilling career where he can thrive.

After Anthony shared his story, guests and trainees participated in a speed networking activity, helping trainees develop soft skills that are essential when entering the workforce, including the ability to initiate conversations and engage meaningfully with new people.

Volunteers left the event impressed by the commitment of trainees and hopeful for their futures in the construction industry. Emad Nesein, Senior Estimator at Guy F. Atkinson Construction, shared, “In a world that’s all about influencers and quick success, these trainees are choosing real work, real effort, and real purpose. That takes guts. Getting their hands dirty, pushing through challenges, and staying committed to something bigger than themselves was nothing short of inspiring.”
