Heroes of Hope Exhibit 2: Meet our Trainee Superheroes

DISPLAY 2

Welcome to Exhibit 2, My name is Rosario I am an Outreach Assist at Hope Builders.

This is where we shine a light on the heroic efforts of the young people we serve. They face significant challenges. When they come to Hope Builders, they’re ready to change and improve the trajectory of their life. This is the origin part of the superhero movie—except instead of Gotham city, Hope Builders’ applicants come from cities like Santa Ana and Anaheim. They face real-world villains of poverty, unstable housing, lack of transportation, and the need for reliable childcare.

It is during the application process that Hope Builders begins to walk alongside our trainees to create a pathway to prosperity. Kind of like how Batman walks alongside Robyn.

The key takeaway here is simple, yet powerful: Hope Builders exists to empower Orange County’s young adults with mentorship, life skills and job skills training that meets the needs of local employers.

As a member of the admissions team, I help support 1200 plus young people who bravely say “I want to change my life”. The applicants are ages 18 to 28.

Transformation begins in the application phase. When someone applies to Hope Builders, we:
• Seek to understand the unique barriers each applicant faces
• Assess their motivation and readiness for training
• And provide additional support for those who are not quite ready.

As you heard earlier, applicants sign a pledge to commit to the program, creating a foundation for accountability. We recognize that skills training alone can’t remove the obstacles that once held them back. To address this Hope Builders immediately connects them to tutoring and additional resources—such as childcare and transportation vouchers—so they can overcome real-life hurdles and build lasting habits for success.

Meet Our Superhero: Cindy. Cindy is a Hope Builders alum whose story reflects the journey of many of our trainees.

Cindy once shared: “I was lost and facing many barriers, but now I know I am capable and have Hope.”

Cindy’s superpower? Accountability

Why accountability, you ask? Because Cindy learned that without the steady support of Hope Builders’ instructors and career coaches, she wouldn’t have reached her goals. Their accountability kept her focused and encouraged. — Even in moments when she felt like giving up. Our career coaches met with her one on one, offering guidance, encouragement, and solutions tailored to her unique challenges. This holistic approach combines structure with compassion.

Now look closely at the three-pronged stool on the pedestal. (Pick up the stool) Each prong represents our multi-faceted approach to helping our trainees succeed:
• 1st Life Skills – Teaching time management, budgeting, problem solving
• 2nd Hard Skills –mastering technical abilities in the pathways we train in construction, medical assisting and child development. Examples include developing behavioral intervention plans, giving injections, building a structure as big as the display behind me from the ground up and calculating fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.
• And 3rd Workforce Readiness Skills –the essential abilities for workplace success, including reliability, consistent attendance, strong work ethic, professional communication, and effective interview skills.

You need all 3 elements to build a strong professional foundation. Just like the three legs of the stool—remove one, and the stool becomes unstable, tipping over under pressure.

Like Cindy, many applicants take a leap of faith when they join Hope Builders.

With mentoring, training, and comprehensive support, they transition from feeling like victims of circumstance to heroes of their own stories. Cindy’s transformation is like a superhero suiting up—once she sets her sights on a goal, nothing can stop her.

Hope Builders illuminates a clear pathway to prosperity. By addressing life skills, hard skills, and workforce readiness, we’re not just training workers, we are guiding heroes-in-the-making. As we launch them into the workforce they begin to reach their full potential with confidence.

As our trainees advance through each stage of the Hope Builders program, we equip them with powerful skillsets—arming them to thrive and conquering their fears.

Now, you have a better understanding of the challenges our young people face, and the determination they must bring to overcome them. Together, we can help more young heroes rise—join us in helping solve real life hurdles, building skills, and creating futures filled with hope.
