Empowering Growth: A Trainee Shares the Impact of Tutoring at Hope Builders

Hope Builders bridges the gap between employers seeking skilled, reliable workers and young people who are motivated to start their careers. In Orange County, there are 30,000 young adults who are disconnected from the workforce. Many of them are actively seeking stable employment, but face significant barriers to finding or maintaining a job.
A gap in skills may occur when a young person has not found success in traditional learning environments, or when they have been out of school for an extended amount of time. To solve for this hurdle, Hope Builders offers weekly tutoring sessions that build skills in key competencies including reading, writing, and math, which are critical for careers in healthcare and construction. Tutoring is offered at any point once an application has been submitted to our programs.

Cindy, a current Child Development Careers trainee, participated in tutoring while in the applicant phase of our Student Journey. She was highly motivated to succeed at Hope Builders, and wanted to get a head start. Tutoring helped her build confidence and develop skills in areas where she knew she may struggle to keep up with the course materials, particularly math. “From the start, I was welcomed with a warm smile. At first I thought I was not going to understand the material, but as the weeks passed and I continued to attend the tutoring sessions, my understanding increased. It became so much easier to solve equations on my own.” Because of her dedication, Cindy began training equipped with the skills needed to excel.
Beyond subject knowledge, tutoring fosters essential skills like time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking. These abilities are vital in the workplace, where employees are expected to navigate complex tasks, meet deadlines, and think creatively. Tutors also provide feedback and encouragement, helping students build confidence, a crucial trait when entering the job market. Cindy shares, “Tutoring has helped me gain confidence in learning new material, improved my study skills and taught me the importance of asking clarifying questions when something isn’t clear. I now feel ready to take on any challenges.”
Ultimately, tutoring bridges the gap between academic learning and professional success, equipping young people, like Cindy, with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to excel in their future careers.
